Tough Teachings of Jesus: You Must Hate Your Father and Mother, Part 1

Tough Teachings of Jesus: You Must Hate Your Father and Mother, Part 1

by Kevin M. Baker on May 24, 2020

Key Scripture: Luke 14:25-33

As we look at some of the “tough” teachings of Jesus, the issues of love and hate become the springboard for us to learn more about what it means to be the kind of followers Jesus is looking for. Many churches today don’t require very much of those who want to become members. But Jesus wanted people to count the cost of being one of his followers up front, and also to understand that a disciple must “give up everything he has” and “hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life...” His use of exaggeration to grab listeners’ attention means that the point he’s trying to make is extremely important!
